Session Objective

The purpose of this breakout session is to familiarize the Cabinet members with the activities of the College of Architecture and Environmental Design (CAED) related to the goal of "Achieving Sustainable Solutions to the Global Energy and Environmental Challenge," and to solicit recommendations from the Cabinet members concerning our preparation of graduates who can be better informed and equipped to address these issues and our potential role in fostering more sustainable campus, regional, and national practices and policies. We will examine opportunities and constraints that Cal Poly and built environment professions face across the continuum of the development process, from land use planning to building design and through construction to operations of facilities.

Session Questions

1. Are there any industry or professional activities, programs, or granting agencies that cabinet members are aware of that could involve CAED and other College's participation?

2. Are there any specific corporate, community, or governmental development or policy best practices that our faculty and students should be exposed to and made aware of?

3. Are there any emerging trends, technologies, or polices that we should become aware of or engaged with?

4. From your own personal, professional, or business perspective, are there changes in policy, financial incentives, or other assistance that would help the private sector, the government sector, and our own University respond to some of the built environment challenges?

5. Given Cal Poly's areas of expertise and connections to professions and industry, where do you see our University and its colleges playing a potential leadership role in education or applied research, and what will it take for us to get to that position?

6. What facilities, equipment, technology, or other resources do you think we need to achieve and maintain our leadership in addressing sustainability challenges.

7. With whom should we partner in order to play a leadership role?
